WHAT WAS THE BLACK DEATH?
The Middle Ages began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476. It was a period of progress, but also of war and disease. It ended with the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 or in 1492 with the arrival in America.
La Edad Media comienza con la caída del Imperio Romano en el año 476 d. C. Fue un periodo de progreso y avances pero también de guerras y enferemedades. Algunos historiadores dicen que terminó con las Caída de Constantinopla (Caída del Imperio Bizantino), otros dicen que la Edad Media terminón con la llegada de Colón a América.
WARS/ GUERRAS
There were a lot of wars in the Middle Ages. The Hundred Years´War was fought between England and France. Many castles were built in this period for protection.
Durante la Edad Media hubo muchas guerras, una de las más conocidas fue la Guerra de los Cien Años entre Inglaterra y Francia (esta guerra en realidad duró 116 años y finalizó con la victoria de los franceses). En esta época se construyeron muchos castillos que servían como protección.
TRADE / COMERCIO
There was an increase in trade during this period. Merchants from Europe, Asia and North Africa traded goods such as wool, wheat, iron, spices, cloth and silk.
Hubo un aumento de comercio en este periodo. Los mercaderes o comerciantes de Europa, Asia y el norte de África comerciaban con lana, trigo, hierro, especias, tejidos y seda.
UNIVERSITIES/ UNIVERSIDADES
The first university in Europe was founded in Italy in the 11th century, but the first university in the world was the University of al-Qarawiyyin in Morocco, which was founded in AD 859.
La primera universidad de Europa se fundó en Italia en el siglo XI en la ciudad de Bolonia, pero la primera universidad del mundo es la Universidad de al-Qarawiyyin en Marruecos, fundada en el 859 d. C.

The Black Death was a plague in Europe. It killed about 75 million people in the 14th century. The plegue was carried by fleas and the fleas were carried by rats.
La Peste Negra fue una plaga que se extendió por Europa muy rápidamente, mató a unos 75 millones de personas en el siglo XIV. Esta plaga era transmitida por las pulgas que tenían las ratas. En esta época, debido a la suciedad que había en las calles era normal que hubiera muchas ratas.
THE CRUSADES/ LAS CRUZADAS
During the Middle Ages Christians from Europe travelled to the Holy Land to try to recover it from the Muslims. The Crusades took place during 11th, 12th and 13th centuries.
Durante la Edad Media los Cristianos de Europa viajaban a Tierra Santa (los lugares en los que vivió Jesucristo) para intentar recuperarlo de los Musulmanes. Las Cruzadas tuvieron lugar en los siglos XI, XII y XIII.
NEW IDEAS AND DISCOVERIES FROM THE EAST/ NUEVAS IDEAS Y DESCUBRIMIENTOS DEL ORIENTE
The Christians could not keep any of the lands they conquered during the Crusades. However, they did return with lots of new discoveries such as gundpowder and new musical instruments. They also brought back new ideas about medicine, science and mathematics.
Los Cristianos no consiguieron conservar ninguno de los territorios conquistados. Aún así, ellos volvieron con montones de nuevos descubrimientos tales como la pólvora y nuevos instrumentos musicales. también trajeron nuevas ideas sobre medicina, ciencia y matemáticas.
